A book is a written medium for recording historical information, usually written of several pages covered together and enclosed by a covered cover. The most technical term for this manuscript format is codex. It is often used as a medium of communication between researchers and other interested parties. In recent years, electronic books have been gaining popularity.
One of the earliest works in this tradition was written about four centuries ago in Greece by the name of Homer, an epistle written in Greek. Homer’s epistle is called the Iliad. The work was known as the Odyssey, which is regarded as one of the greatest epics in the world, a story of heroics by the famous poet Homer. The Iliad was adapted by one of the great geniuses of modern times, the English playwright William Shakespeare who wrote the play Taming of the Shrew, based on the Iliad.
The Iliad and the Odyssey are not the only two literary works derived from ancient Greek writing. Other epics that belong to the same genre as the Iliad and the Odyssey include the Achebes, Pharsalia, and the Aetna. These literary works were also produced in hand-made scrolls similar to the ones mentioned above. Originating from the period of the 7th century BCE these scrolls were mainly used by lower class citizens as legal documents. The scroll makers would write a brief account of a particular incident or legal case within a scroll that could be presented legally to the next level. However, over time the role of these hand-made scrolls as a means of preserving historical and political information was taken over by those who used the technology of printing.
Printing technology was invented around the same time as the scrolls, hence the two became one. The first printed scroll came about during the nineteenth century when people started using typewriters. Once again the purpose of the scroll maker was to create legal documents but this time it was in the form of a book instead of a scroll. The earliest copies of these early books were not very informative and did not deal with legal matters but dealt more with everyday events and occurrences. However, the invention of mass-produced paper allowed people to create longer works of art more easily.
After the 19th century scrolls became more popular as they no longer had to be created by hand and people could now produce as many as they wanted without any cost to them. A number of methods were used to create books, among which the most common was engraving. This process involved passing an engraved image on a piece of white paper while the text was written on another surface. This engraving method was quite effective as it was easy to produce excellent quality textiles using this method. One drawback of this method was the difficulty in seeing small print. This problem was later solved with the invention of the magnifying glass.
A new type of book-making method came into being known as the press-roll book-press. This new type of press-roll book maker made it easier for people to create large numbers of inexpensive books as it required less effort to press the rolled paper. However, the new presses could only be used on a single sheet of paper at a time. People soon realized that it was possible to easily create unlimited books by using the steam press although the cost was increased and some people began to consider it a waste of time.
